Around The Mountains

The Around the Mountains Trail (175km), will begin with a steamship boat ride from Queenstown on the TSS Earnslaw across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak. The cycle trail then heads through Walter Peak and Mount Nicholas Stations, and along the Von Valley, Lake Mavora. It then follows the Oreti River and from Mossburn along the old railway line to Lumsden and then through Athol, Garston and finally ending at Kingston.

The trail allows cyclists an opportunity to explore and discover some of New Zealand’s most secluded and rustic rural settings at a relaxing pace without sacrificing the comforts of home. Those eager to be transported back in time will appreciate the many historic townships and relics left behind by the region’s pioneers. Along the way you can expect to be welcomed by charming locals, served mouth-watering meals and told stories about the beautiful places they call home. All while experiencing real, heartland New Zealand.

The trail’s easy gradient and great local climate make it a good ride all-year-round.

Queenstown’s town centre is ten minutes drive from the international airport. There are regular airport shuttles, taxis, rental cars and a local bus service. Many activity and accommodation providers also offer free shuttles to/from the town centre.
